The Touhou Thread

So Touhou recently had it's 20th anniversary and then I'm guessing I'm going to have to make a new thread to spread the magnificent word of Touhou.

This thread will probably be mostly occupied by me unless others wish to splurge about Touhou. This will mostly be about news about Touhou and just to fangirl over how amazing the series is.

FAQ:

1. What is Touhou?
-Touhou is a bullet-hell/fighting game series in which is revolves around the exploits of the two consistent main characters, Reimu Hakurei and Marisa Kirisame and the incidents that happen in Gensokyo.

2. Who made Touhou?
-ZUN. Our Head Priest, Junya Ota

3. Where can I watch this anime?
-There are currently 3 fanmade anime of the non-anime series you heretic.

4. Why is this series so popular?
-Good question. I suspect it is due to the amazing music and the prolific fanbase which trotted Touhou on a billboard within space called the internet. The fanbase is also extremely talented as said above, all three of those anime are completely fanmade. They also make numerous amounts of music PV's, memes, inside jokes, manga, fanmade games either original or rips or other media (Rule 9). This also has to due with ZUN's attitude towards copyright. He finds it fine to create fanmade items of his series as long as the it is completely self-funded. (There was an issue with Touhou smash where the creator desired a crowd-fund and ZUN disagreed with that.)

5. How can I get into Touhou?

I was going to just make fun of you and say git gud as per the usual Souls Series way of teaching, but i will give you some actual tips that I've learned.

1. Never look away from your character, even if in a middle of a boss fight where the boss literally has no health and you just need to shoot them once to end the sequence, DO NOT TAKE YOUR EYES OFF THE CHARACTER.

2. If there is a sequence where the game bombards you with a massive amount of bullets, but they track? Stream. Streaming means to slightly move to influence where the bullets will go and you just tap it very slightly every single time until the onslaught is over. Warning though, you have to have enough room to pull this off.

3. Start on easy. Despite how I will make fun of you for it, always start on the easiest difficulty and make your way up, especially if you are new to bullet hells.

4. Bullet hell games are mostly just memorization of the patterns and twitch reflexes. How the hell do you think I beat flandre's Extra stage in Fantastic Danmaku Festival, I didn't do it one try, hell no. I dedicated at least one hour, every day, for at least two months before I could beat her. And it was worth it.

5. Use your fucking bombs. They are worth less than your life. Risk your bombs for lives if they drop.

6. You don't have to kill everything on the screen unless you are going for a score run.

7. Remember to Shotgun when safe. Shotgunning is basically a very dangerous tactic where you move your sprite as close to the enemy as possible to maximize the amount of damage done from your bullets, this is mostly effective when using a character with a spread bullet pattern.

This video shows a good example of the tips and also what I had to go through for two months.

@4:35 is the boss. And the rest of the video too. God damn it was an amazing boss battle.

The sheer amount of bullets she throws at you during her last spell card. The developers evoked a very clear feeling during that sequence. Complete helplessness.

The closest thing to a bullet hell I play is Helldivers. Twin stick shooter. It could be argued that it's not a bullet hell, but when there's eight ion cannons firing simultaneously as all Divers fire in the wrong direction with their very Teamkilly weapons... I feel it, your pain. I am certain that the Touhou games are incredibly harder, but I hardly have any patience when it comes to certain games.

However, I did push through Dark Souls, so I can confirm that practice makes perfect. Took me over a year to kill Artorias. A. Year. Determination is the key to all frustratingly hard games, no matter the type.

But bullet hell-types are the worst.

I got a game on Steam called Suguri which is the first bullet hell I've ever played. I don't think it's Touhou, but it is a bunch of little girls shooting lasers at each other in the sky. Thanks for the tips. I still can't get past the first stage boss. I get her down to the last bar of health then die every time.

They just released a psuedo silent teaser that I found entertaining seeing how they're obviously going the memes/inside joke/touhou hijack/general comedy route for this one.

Wow, it really has begun.

So with the first release of the Touhou games that are now on PS4 along with the next batch coming in early 2017. USGamer actually pulled ZUN aside and did an actual interview with him. Asking him questions from a Western perspective since we are finally being ported over here. I find this really, really cool to see another interview, but this time from a Western medium.
