Eternity by Term
'Tis often said that truth is fundamentally subjective. I would not go quite so far, but, indeed, it is often hard to distinguish the varying degrees of reality from the shroud of lies and falseness. Perspective, experience, state of mind, body, heart and spirit... in short, all mortal failings, are intrinsically opposed to an objective view of the world. But again, how is a man expected to rid himself of each worldly allegiance? Of all certainties?
Many across the ages have contested that which was considered truth, with wildly different results. From the first man to question reality to the most modern shift in philosophical thought, we seek to define and immortalize a concept as facetious as truth.
Alas, that is impossible, for each man's truth is his own.
While there is no one truth, there is one single root of all truths, a fundamental and unshakeable reality which functions as the very core of the universe, that which existence stems from. It is locked in a most perilous location, guarded by countless beings, secured from the sight of mere mortals, for fear of their greed.
This root, the Flame Highest, a burning pillar of incandescent truth, oozing with energy, has been fading. For a long time, might I add. It is consumed, again and again, until, in the end, it will burn no more, a pile of ashes blown to the winds.
It is the root of all causes, and its extinction would excise all realities, by reflex. And then all will be a howling chaos, lacking rhyme or reason.
A few have been chosen to light it once more. Picked by the unseen forces that protect reality, and left at the gates of the Flame. A harsh journey awaits them, filled with fear, sorrow, and sacrifice. Should they fail, others shall come. And after them, others still. No sacrifice is too great. For the Flame can never die.
